Friends of the River Crane Environment

 FORCE cordinate a Riverfly Monitoring Initiative (RMI) on the River Crane and tributaries, and are looking for more volunteers. The RMI is a national scheme for monitoring the health of rivers, developed by the Riverfly Partnership. It gives trained volunteers the tools to detect and report pollution events, builds essential long-term datasets on the health of rivers and links volunteers with other organisations working to improve our rivers. 

RMI sampling uses the presence and abundance of invertebrates in a sample to gauge the health of your river. Free training in the sampling method will be provided by the Zoological Society of London. As places are limited please make sure you can sample your river for at least 6 months (1 sample per month) before registering. Plus you must be over 16 to attend this course.

Firstly you MUST complete the online theory session on 5th or 12th August and PASS A TEST to attend practical training. Click here to sign up for the theory session

Then in the practical session in the river you will learn:

• How to kick sample a river
• How to identify river invertebrates and score a sample
• What to do with the data you collect and how to get involved in Riverfly Monitoring Schemes across London
